AMPACITY IN WIRES AND CABLES

๐ Ampacity means the current handling capacity of an electrical wire or cable. In a simple term, it means how many amps of current the electrical wire can pass without degradation (burns, melting etc.)
Aluminum wires and copper wires are the wires used in the electrical industry. Copper wires are predominantly used for domestic and industrial electrification because of its conductivity and strength. Copper wires come in Annealed copper wires which are more flexible to work with and are used in domestic and industrial electrification and also come in Hard drawn wires which are very hard to work with and are used as high voltage and current bus wires in industrial settings Aluminum wires are mainly used as service wires and High voltage transmission and distribution wires mainly because of their light weight and are most times strengthened with steel to improve strength and reduce oxidation.
A single piece of electrical wire comes in two different form factors;
๐ Solid core
๐ Stranded core
Both solid core and stranded come in cross sectional areas in millimeters like 1mm square meter etc.
when you use a wire or cable in system where the Ampacity of the wire or cable is smaller than the load current, you are at the risk of electrical fire, wire damage, system failure etc.
Make sure you have a safety factor of 2, when using electrical wires in systems. E.g. if the expected load current is 10A, a 20A wire or cable is recommended for safety, long lasting and lower wire or cable temperature. When two or more wires are enclosed in a sheath it's called a cable.
Electrical Wires come in solid core and stranded core, bare or PVC coated or any other insulator, different CSA (cross sectional area)
Electrical cables come in two or multi-core, PVC coated or any other insulator, with braids, foils screens, armored, Mineral insulated, twin + earth, flexible cords and Cables etc.
